My teaching took off sideways

Livingstone Elementary School in Vancouver is the site of a teacher-inquiry project supported by BCTF Research, UBC, and the Vancouver School Board. Last year, a group of teachers from the school, the school principal, and one teacher from Strathcona Elementary School, participated in the group. Their focus was on the use of interactive whiteboards (Smartboards), and how these impact teaching and learning. Connected to a computer and a projector, the Smartboard projects images onto a large touch-sensitive screen, and can be operated through a keyboard or using a special pen directly on the screen.

The inquiry group met monthly, with individuals or groups looking at different areas of practice, including the use of video and still images, Internet access, student engagement, the changing nature of

“I don’t know how to put this,” Brook said, after first mentioning the wonderful culture at Vancouver’s David Livingstone elementary and the exceptional efforts of teachers to promote the use of technology in classrooms. “What I’m good at is supporting teachers with passion — and we have some pretty passionate teachers here who’ve been able to make a lot happen.”

Sylvia Zubke, the teacher-librarian who pushed Brook’s nomination as one of Canada’s Outstanding Principals for 2011, was more effusive, describing Brook as “just an amazing man” who is adored by staff and parents alike. She became aware of the award only after searching the Internet for some way of showing Brook how much he’s appreciated… [Full article on The Vancouver Sun]
